Use Update Row by ID to set or clear selected cells in one existing Data Table row while preserving every other cell.
Step Library: Data Tables
When to use this step
Use this step when you want to:
- change a known row without replacing unrelated cells;
- enforce optimistic concurrency with the row's current version.
Use Create Row when the row does not exist yet.
Before you begin
You must be Table Owner or Table User for the selected table when you configure and publish the workflow. Obtain Row ID and Row Version from a previous Data Table row output or another trusted source.
Configure the step
- Add Update Row by ID from Data Tables.
- Select a Table.
- Enter Row ID and Row Version.
- For each column, choose Keep current value, Set value, or Clear value.
- Save or publish the workflow.
Settings
| Setting | Required | Accepted values | Visible when | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Table | Yes | Data Table where you are Table Owner or Table User | Always | Selects the table and captures its stable column schema. |
| Row ID | Yes | Text or Text variable | Table is selected | Stable ID of the single row to update. |
| Row Version | Yes | Positive whole Number or Number variable | Table is selected | Expected current version; prevents overwriting a concurrent change. |
| Column change | Yes for at least one column | Keep current value, Set value, or Clear value | Table is selected | Keeps the cell unchanged, assigns a typed value, or removes the cell value. |
| Value | Yes | Fixed value or compatible variable for the column type | Column change = Set value | New value for that cell. |
Data and outputs
Workflow variable effects
This step does not modify workflow variables.
Step outputs
| Step output | Type | Available when | Scope | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Row ID | Text | After success | Following steps in the current branch | Stable ID of the updated row. |
| Row | Data Table row Object | After success | Following steps in the current branch | Complete updated row with its incremented version. |
| Result Status | Text | After success | Following steps in the current branch |
updated. |
Runtime behavior
Execution and completion
Flowifier loads the row through the central service, applies only configured set/clear changes and submits the complete merged values with Row Version. Unchanged People snapshots and File reference IDs are preserved. The publishing user stored in the workflow authorization becomes Updated By. The step completes after the versioned update commits.
Branches and child steps
This step does not have branches or child steps.
Failure, retry and resume behavior
This step does not suspend execution or perform automatic retries. A version conflict is not retried automatically because doing so could overwrite a newer value.
Errors and limits
| Situation | Result | Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| No column change is configured | The workflow cannot be published | Select Set value or Clear value for at least one column. |
| The row does not exist | The step fails without changing data | Verify the Row ID and table. |
| Row Version is stale | The step fails with a version conflict | Query or load the row again and use its current version. |
| A value is invalid for the current column | The step fails without updating the row | Correct the fixed value or source variable. |
| The table schema changed | Republishing is blocked | Reselect the table and review the column changes. |
Example
Mark an invoice as paid
Goal: Change only the status and paid date of a queried invoice.
Configuration:
-
Table:
Invoices - Row ID: previous Row ID
- Row Version: previous Row > Version
-
Status: Set value =
Paid -
Paid date: Set value =
Today - Every other column: Keep current value
Result: The two selected cells change, other cells remain unchanged, and Row contains the new version.
